A Day Without Police (3/13/10)

On October 7th, 1969, the Montreal Police Department went on strike, demanding higher salaries.  Thousands of police officers congregated for what they referred to as an “all-day study session.”  Meanwhile, in Montreal, all hell was breaking loose. 6 banks were robbed and around 100 shops were looted.  Things got even worse when a radical group of taxi drivers decided to settle some beef with the Murray Hill Limousine Company.  The cabbies were furious because they felt the limousine company had a monopoly on airport pickups.  800 protesters headed to the Murray Hill garage.  Gunfire erupted between protesters. Four buses were set on fire.  A flaming bus careened through a garage door.  Quebec provincial police officers were called in to cover for the striking Montreal officers.  One of these officers was shot and killed.  Montreal police tried to hinder the attempts of outside police forces, to make their strike even more successful.  At the end of the day, Montreal suffered the present-day equivalent of 10 million dollars of damage.  The Montreal officers were given a pay raise, and the necessary arrests were made.  This is all a pretty depressing look into human nature, and an even more depressing look into the ruthless chauffeur business.
